What it is

The Whiteout opens with one line: "In the spring of 2025, it started snowing. It never stopped." You play a lone traveller crossing a collapsed, snowbound America where "food is scarce, and trust is not affordable". The game is a chapter-based adventure. You walk, search for supplies, use items to get past obstacles and decide whom to trust. The narrative branches on those choices, and there are several versions of the ending, plus four player profiles so you can replay with different decisions. A Traveler's Log keeps any dialogue you missed. The crank scrolls text and drives a few mini-games, and at one point you blow into the microphone.

It's by Scenic Route Software (S.G. Chipman, with John Clarkson co-writing the story), the team behind Post Hero. Headphones are "strongly encouraged", and there's an "audio cues" setting for players who can't use sound. The content note is serious: it "depicts acts of violence, implies a suicide and features mature themes", with a curse-word filter on by default. Early players found the walking slow, and a hold-B-to-walk-faster option has been added since.

It came out in Week 2 of Playdate Season Two (5 June 2025) alongside Wheelsprung and now sells for $12 in the Catalog. It was a 2025 Community Awards finalist for Best Narrative Game and Best Sound Design.
