What it is
SOLAR DESCENT is "an action-adventure game in the vein of classic titles from the late 80s and early 90s, sprinkled with modern flair". The store lists more than 300 handcrafted rooms across "more than half a dozen distinct areas", with challenging dungeons, bosses and side quests. It has real-time combat with two attack buttons, abilities you can switch on the fly, "clever combat integration of the crank", upgrade systems, and full maps and menus. Simberg counts seven full-size dungeons where most Playdate Zelda-likes manage three, along with swappable items, secrets, wizards who share hints, equippable relics, and dungeon maps with a compass. It's made in Pulp, yet the whole game is 1.1 MB. Crank use is "more than moderate" by default, and accessibility options can reduce or remove it.
It's by Quang Hoang, released in the Catalog in September 2025 for $6 (and $5.99 on itch.io), with a demo, published source code and updates into May 2026. It won Outstanding Pulp Game of the Year and Outstanding Innovation in a Pulp Game at the 2025 Playdate Community Awards.
