What it is
"Welcome to a world's End." In Overseer, the Overseer, a being who watches over the souls of the land, gives life to another lost spirit and sets out into the world. Humanity sees these spirits as demons, "monsters set on their destruction", and the game leaves it to you to decide whether that's true: "This is a story for you to witness and interpret." It's a side-scrolling Metroidvania with winding paths, hidden routes, abandoned cities and camps, and "grotesque monstrosities" to fight. Simberg calls it "the most NES Metroid-like game on the Playdate", with very precise platforming and little health, and puts it at about three hours. Content warnings: minor sprite flashing, coarse language and unsettling creatures.
It's by Stoff, released free on itch.io (no Catalog listing) after about a year and a half of development, according to Simberg. The itch.io page says no generative AI was used. At the 2025 Playdate Community Awards it was a finalist for Game of the Year, Best Action Game and Best Launch Experience.
